Communication challenges in the age of artificial intelligence

The Societat Catalana de Comunicació (SCC) is organizing the VIII International Congress on Communication Research, which will take place at the headquarters of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Carme Street, 47, Barcelona) on 5 and 6 June 2025. During this event, the XXXV Annual Conference of the Societat Catalana de Comunicació and the I Meeting of Scientific Journals of Communication in the linguistic field will also be held.

The presentation of communications can be done in either in-person or online synchronous format, both on 5 and 6 June 2025. Each author can present a maximum of three communications.

Congress participants can choose to publish their presentations in Comunicació. Revista de Recerca i d’Anàlisi (a scientific journal indexed in Web of Science Core Collection) or as a chapter in the congress monograph published by the academic publishing house Tirant lo Blanch. Each communication can only be published in one of the formats.

Format and formal aspects of presentations

Communication presentations will take place on 5 and 6 June 2025, and can be defended in two formats:

  • In-person format at the headquarters of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
  • Online format through a live videoconference.

Presentations should last fifteen (15) minutes. Afterwards, there will be a discussion among the participants at each table. PowerPoint or other supports can be used.

All registered people will receive a certificate issued by the SCC in both the attendee and author capacities.

THEMATIC AREAS FOR PROPOSALS

The VIII Congress especially encourages reflection and research around the challenges of communication in the age of artificial intelligence. Therefore, the Congress calls for papers in the following thematic areas:

  • Artificial intelligence in the communicative context (media, advertising, public relations, corporate communication…)
  • Challenges for the distribution and monetization of content in the digital age: regulation, problems, opportunities, and strategies of old and new actors
  • OTT, confluences, and divergences in the distribution of audiovisual content through DTT and broadband
  • Public service media: functions and challenges in the digital and multiplatform environment
  • Emerging formats and new narratives in audiovisual languages, within and outside traditional media
  • Audience studies, reception, and algorithmic recommendation strategies
  • Ethics and deontology of communication

In addition, the Congress accepts contributions in these other thematic areas:

  • Communication and war conflicts

PUBLICATION

Submission of communication proposals

The submission of communication proposals (abstracts) will remain open until May 16, 2025, through this form.

Abstracts should be between 300 and 350 words, including 6 keywords. The document should also include the author’s details (name, surname, email, university, or institution), along with a brief curriculum (2-3 lines). Communications written in Catalan, Spanish, other Romance languages, or English will be accepted. The title, abstract, and keywords should be presented in the language of the communication and in English.

The document should be written using Times New Roman font, 12 points, with 1.5 line spacing.

The scientific committee will evaluate the received proposals weekly and provide their assessment within approximately two weeks of receiving them.

Publication of communications (optional)

Full communications that comply with the formal admission guidelines indicated in the 4.1. section will be considered for publication in either of the two modalities (the author can choose the destination for their communication):

  • Publication in Comunicació. Revista de Recerca i Anàlisi (Web of Science Core Collection, Latindex, DICE, RESH, RACÓ, MIAR, ISOC, Dialnet, CCUC, DOAJ, FECYT quality seal).
  • Chapter in the Congress monograph published by the academic publishing house Tirant lo Blanch.

The potential publication of the texts will be subject to the blind and expert review process carried out by the reviewers of the journal and the scientific committee of the VIII International Congress on Communication Research.

Each communication can only be published in one of the formats, although each author can submit more than one communication and choose to publish each presentation in one of the possible formats.

Formal writing characteristics for Comunicació. Revista de Recerca i d’Anàlisi

Participants who wish to be considered for publication in Comunicació. Revista de Recerca i Anàlisi must send the complete text as an attached document to congress.scc@correu.iec.cat with the message title “Article VIII Congress SCC 2025_Last Name of the corresponding author” before June 19, 2025.

These communications must meet the following formal characteristics: they must be unpublished texts, not in the process of publication in other journals or books. The first page should include the title in Catalan and English (at the beginning), as well as a summary of 100 to 150 words and 6 keywords, in Catalan, English, and the language of the communication. The writing style will be Times New Roman font, 12 points, with a 1.5 line spacing. The length will be a minimum of 6,000 words and a maximum of 8,000. Participants who wish to submit their paper for publication in the monograph edited by the publishing house Tirant lo

Blanch must send the full text as an attached document to congress.scc@correu.iec.cat with the message title “Monograph VIII SCC Congress 2025_Surname of corresponding author” before June 19, 2025.

These submissions must meet the formal criteria of the publishing house Tirant lo Blanch.
